At AGIGA, we don't view accessibility as a set of rules to follow; we view it as a fundamental human right. For many, "accessible" means "usable." But for the Blind and Low Vision (BLV) community, accessibility means agency—the ability to interact with the world on your own terms, without needing to ask for permission or help.
1. What is Accessibility?
At its core, accessibility is the practice of designing products, services, and environments so that they can be used by everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.
In the tech world, this is often called Inclusive Design. It’s the intentional effort to remove barriers. Think of it like a "digital ramp." Just as a physical ramp allows both a wheelchair user and a parent with a stroller to enter a building, accessible technology creates a "Universal Design" that benefits everyone.
2. What Accessibility Means for Blind and Low Vision Users
For someone with a vision disability, accessibility boils down to three main pillars:
- Perceivability: Information cannot be "visual-only." If a button is just an icon with no text, a blind user can’t perceive it. Accessibility means providing Alt-Text (descriptions), high-contrast modes, or audio feedback.
- Operability: You shouldn't need a mouse or a "point-and-click" interface to use technology. True accessibility allows for keyboard shortcuts, voice commands, and gesture-based navigation.
- Equivalence: This is the most important part. It isn’t enough for a device to "work"; it must provide the same information at the same time as it does for a sighted person.
3. How We Make Technology Accessible for the BLV Community
Making technology "blind-friendly" is an engineering discipline centered on translating visual data into other senses. For this community, accessibility is built through:
- Descriptive Alt Text (The "Eyes" of the Web): Every image, icon, and button must have Alternative Text. This allows a screen reader to say "Submit Order Button" instead of just "Button 42." Without Alt Text, the digital world is a puzzle with missing pieces.
- Screen Reader Optimization: Using ARIA labels so software like JAWS or VoiceOver can "read" the structure of an app. This ensures the user knows where the header ends and the main content begins.
- Haptic & Audio Feedback: Using vibrations or distinct tones to confirm an action. For example, a "click" sound when a photo is taken or a vibration when a battery is low.
- High Contrast & Scalability: For the 85% of the community with some usable vision, technology must allow for massive text scaling and color inversion (like white text on a black background) without crashing the app layout.
Designing EchoVision: Accessibility from the First Sketch
Most companies build a product and then try to "make it accessible" later. At AGIGA, we did the opposite. EchoVision was born in the blind and low vision community, for the blind and low vision community. Here is how we ensure our smart glasses meet the highest standards of accessibility:
Tactile Hardware
We know that in a world of smooth touchscreens, buttons matter. We designed the EchoVision frames with distinct, tactile buttons that are easy to find by touch. You don't have to guess where to press; the hardware is its own map.
Proactive Audio Agency
Standard accessibility is often "reactive"—the device waits for you to ask. Our AI is proactive. It is designed to whisper context into your ear before you even have to ask, providing a seamless stream of environmental awareness that mirrors the "glance" of a sighted person.
Audio Status Cues
We maximize agency by providing essential audio cues, bypassing the inaccessible LED status lights used by regular products. These auditory notifications keep you fully informed on the status of your Wi-Fi connection, the battery level of the glasses, and the battery level of the charging case.
The Pioneer Feedback Loop
Accessibility isn't a static target; it’s a conversation. Through our Pioneer Team—including legends like Mike May and Michael Hingson—we subject every software update to rigorous real-world testing. If it isn't easy, intuitive, and empowering for a blind user, it doesn't ship.
