APP-07: Volume sliders that update when you swipe the touchpad

Last updated:

Part of the EchoVision Wish List, under Companion App.

  • Status: Under review.
  • What owners asked: Changes made to media and call volume with the touchpad swipes forward and back are not reflected right away in the sliders in Settings > Audio. I have to leave that screen and return to it to see the change. Please make the sliders follow the touchpad swipes as they happen.

The need

The touchpad swipes and the Media volume and Call volume sliders in Settings > Audio both change the volume. When you swipe, the sliders keep showing the old level until you leave the screen and come back. Screen reader users can't tell the real volume from the slider, and might move it from the wrong starting point.

Today's workaround

After a touchpad swipe, leave Settings > Audio and open it again to see the current volume.

What it would look like

  • While Settings > Audio is open, the sliders move as soon as you swipe the touchpad.
  • VoiceOver and TalkBack read the new value when the slider has focus.
  • No new button, gesture or setting.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: the screen always shows the real volume.
  • Pro: no more confusion between the slider and the touchpad.
  • Con: the glasses must tell the app about every volume change, which uses a little more Bluetooth traffic.
  • Con: a screen reader might speak too often if it announces every step during a long swipe.

Open questions

  • Do the sliders and the touchpad swipes change the same stored volume?
  • Should the screen reader announce a change made from the touchpad, or only update the slider quietly?
  • Should a volume change made with the phone's volume buttons during a call also update the Call volume slider?
